Location of speedometer hook-up on 68 VW transaxle?
I just bought a dune buggy that I’m in the process of making street legal. The best guess is that this power train out of a 1968 or 69 Volkswagen beetle. It’s a 1600 series engine with a 4 speed manual Transmission.
Now I’ve hit a bit of a snag since I can’t figure out where to hook the speedometer up to. Does anyone know where to look for the plug, port, or whatever on the transaxel to attach an aftermarket speed sender?
You need to find the hole that goes thru the middle of the front axle.(away from the tire side) That will take the speedo cable.(if you are going in the mud , I would put some sealer on the outside of the cable housing.) Your dune buggy may have this hole sealed up and will need to be cleaned out. Same with the bearing cap. You may need to get one with a square hole in it. The speedo cable will come out the middle of the axle and fit to this grease cap. As mentioned, held in place with a circlip. I would cover mine with silicone seal to keep crap out of the front bearings.
